The GeoQuest – A New Twist on a New Game

Instructions - The Guide to The Quest

Starting Coordinates / Keys to the Quest: Riddles and Formulas

Let the Quest begin! One of the brand new events for this year’s Bartown Festival is sure to be a hit with those who enjoy Geocaching. The “Bartown-Canadian Tire GeoQuest” will take place from July 19-25. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches").

In Geocaching there are many variations of cache types. Our uniquely-styled event will be organized as a Multi-Cache while incorporating aspects of Offset (one cache leads to the next), Puzzle and Virtual Caches. The event, themed as “Hunting For history”, will take place over the course of the Bartown Festival. Participants will be required to register prior to the event and also to provide their own equipment i.e. GPS receiver and digital camera.

The location of the caches and the offsets and puzzles will reflect the history of the town and this year’s festival theme. It is important to note that Virtual caches do not actually have physical cache objects. They are simply an interesting location. In our case the locations will all have an interesting historical aspect. Verification will be in the form of a digital picture taken of the participant at the location.

Participants will be given starting coordinates and Puzzle clues to locate the various caches. Clues in GeoCache hunts are often encrypted with a cipher. GeoQuest participants will use the GeoCache standard ROT13 cipher, a simple substitution cipher.

Everybody who completes The Quest will have a chance at winning prizes. Participants will be required to find all of the “caches” in order to qualify for a ballot for a prize draw to be held immediately after the festival on Wednesday, July 28. First prize is a brand new Magellan GPS receiver . Second prize is a set of Cobra GMRS radios and the third place prizes is a Bushline fishing vest (VOMP). All prizes have been provided by Canadian Tire North Sydney.

An entrance fee of $10 will be charged. Pre-Registration will be required and will be held on until Friday, July 16 at the Bartown offices. The event is open to individuals and teams. One event T-shirt will be given per registration fee. Additional shirts will be available on request for a small fee.
